30th Festival of contemporary European theatre and dance

03. Nov. – 08. Nov. 2020

30 years of theatre and dance from the old and new Europe

With the patronage of Leipzig’s Mayor, Burkhard Jung

euro-scene Leipzig will take place for the 30th time from 03. – 08. November 2020. The festival of contemporary European theatre and dance will show about 12 guest performances from 10 countries in approximately 25 performances at 8 venues, among them several German premières. Leipzig’s Mayor, Burkhard Jung, is the festival’s patron.

In our 30th anniversary year, there will be a broad spectrum of aesthetics in theatre, dance, performance and staged music. The festival will show a number of pieces that represent a 30-year era. And there will be a reunion with numerous artists who have had a special influence on euro-scene Leipzig. Nikolaus Habjan, puppet builder and puppeteer, director and performer from Vienna, is one of them; several of his productions will be shown.

Ann-Elisabeth Wolff – from 1991-93 Co-Director and, since the fall of 1993, Festival Director – has decided to pass on the directorship after the 30th anniversary in 2020, in order to ensure the festival’s successful path into the future. She will be exclusively responsible for the 2020 festival. From 2021, Christian Watty, currently Expert Advisor for the internationale tanzmesse nrw, Dusseldorf, among others, will then take over the position of Festival Director.

euro-scene Leipzig was founded in 1991. Every year, it brings experimental theatre and innovative dance from throughout Europe to Leipzig on six days in November. euro-scene Leipzig is the only festival for contemporary theatre and modern dance in the new German states and belongs to the most important festivals of its kind in Europe.

euro-scene Leipzig is financed by the City of Leipzig and the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony as well as numerous representatives of the guest performance countries and other partners. Cultural partner of the festival are MDR Kultur and ARTE. Presenter of the festival is the foundation Sächsischer Verein zur Förderung des kulturellen Austauschs nationaler und internationaler Tanz- und Theatergruppen e. V.

The programme of the festival will be announced at the beginning of July 2020.
