This puppet theatre piece is based on the true fate of Friedrich Zawrel who, as a child, had survived the euthanasia crimes of the German occupation of Austria during World War II. Nikolaus Habjan’s emphatic performance and his clacking-mouth puppets make the process abstract and create a piece that belongs to the most disturbing theatre events in recent years.

Albert Camus’ drama, which premiered in Paris in 1944, has the power of a classical tragedy of fate. Jan had long been lost and returns, unrecognized, to his mother and sister. Nikolaus Habjan stages the piece with three life-sized puppets that meld with three actors over time; it is a kind of crime story à la Alfred Hitchcock.
