The figure of the wanderer is the focus of this unusual evening. The wanderer leaves everything behind to go on a search – without having a sense of his way’s objective. The melancholy but simultaneously exhilarating interaction between words, music and puppetry is made possible by the teamwork of the master puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan and Musicbanda Franui. The piece’s title »Doch bin ich nirgend, ach! zu Haus« (»But nowhere am I – alas! – at home«) is a quote from Franz Schubert’s Lied »Der Wanderer an den Mond« (»The wanderer speaks to the moon«).

Musicbanda Franui, named after an Alpine meadow in East Tyrol, was founded in 1993 and has been playing since then in an almost unchanged lineup. In addition to concerts in Austria and abroad, they regularly participate in theatre productions, e. g. at the Ruhrtriennale and Salzburger Festspiele. »Doch bin ich nirgend, ach! zu Haus« is their second collaboration with Nikolaus Habjan after »Fool of love« (2012) at Burgtheater Wien, which was based on Shakespeare’s sonnets.

Robert Walser, born in Biel in 1878, wrote prose and novels, among them »Jakob von Gunten« (1909). From the 1920s, he was only active as a newspaper columnist. In 1933 he moved to a sanatorium and nursing home on his own accord and was soon forgotten. He died on Christmas 1956 during a walk through the snow. His works were first rediscovered in the 1970s.
