A place, somewhere. Between the past and the present. Messengers appear. They report. They tell stories. They defend themselves. They contradict themselves. Their topics: forgetting. Remembering. Germany. All of us. And again and again: a party at a castle, shortly before the end of the Second World War. A party during which more than 180 forced labourers were murdered. A party that no one wants to remember and no one can forget.

The party that Elfriede Jelinek has made an anchor in her text, took place: during a so-called SS evening at the castle of the duchess Batthyány, born Thyssen-Bornemisza, in Rechnitz / Austria, more than 180 Jewish-Hungarian forced labourers were murdered in March 1945. An event, that has still not been sufficiently explained: witnesses died suddenly, the victims were never found, suspects live on undisturbed – and the rural community is paralysed. An oppressive text on suppression, belittling and mendacity.

Elfriede Jelinek, born in 1946 in Mürzzuschlag / Styria, is considered one of the most important present-day authors. She was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize in 1998 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004. »Rechnitz (Der Würgeengel)« (»Rechnitz (The exterminating angel)«) was premiered in 2008 at the Münchner Kammerspiele. Enrico Lübbe, director of the Schauspiel Leipzig, staged the play in 2012 at the Schauspielhaus Chemnitz as first presentation in an East-German theatre.
