Pina Bausch, born in 1940 in Solingen, was one of the most important choreographers of the 20th century. Her style influenced successive generations of directors and choreographers and created stage works of international standing. Wim Wenders, born in 1943 in Düsseldorf, planned his film together with Pina Bausch. After her death in the summer of 2009, he decided to create the film as a memorial to her.

»Pina« is a dance film and a visual journey of discovery – beyond the stage and into the city and surrounding area of Wuppertal. Thrilling excerpts from her most important works including »Le sacredu printemps« (»Rite of spring«), »Kontakthof« and »Café Müller« are one of the highlights. Dancers from her ensemble speak about Pina Bausch. The film won the 2011 German Film Award for best documentary film and was nominated for an Oscar 2012.
