Sahra Huby wins the competition »Das beste deutsche Tanzsolo« (»Best German dance solo«) 2009

The competition »Das beste deutsche Tanzsolo« (»Best German dance solo«) 2009 was decided during the final eve of the euro-scene Leipzig last night. The jury consisting of 5 members awarded the first prize to Sahra Huby from Munich. With her solo »Elephantengedächtnis« (»Infallible memory«) she showed a human being injured in body and soul, who attempts, with the help of crutches, to face up again to the norms of society.

The second prize went to Paloma Saskia Thorausch from Essen, the third prize to Janine Schneider from Berlin. Wesley D’Alessandro from Hanover won the audience award.

The first three winners were awarded prize moneys between EUR 3,500.00 and EUR 1,500.00, founded by the BMW Plant Leipzig and the euro-scene Leipzig. The prize of the audience includes a stay free at the next euro-scene Leipzig, founded by the hotel Holiday Inn Garden Court, Leipzig.

The competition »Das beste deutsche Tanzsolo«, based on a conception by Alain Platel, Ghent, was held within the festival euro-scene Leipzig for the 9th time. It was a big viewer magnet and all three public rounds had already been sold out in the run-up to the festival.

Anyone could apply independent of age, training, style and nationality. In total 83 applications were received from 12 countries. In an internal pre-selection the festival director of the euro-scene Leipzig, Ann-Elisabeth Wolff, and the artistic director of the competition, René Reinhardt, chose 22 participants. They presented their solo of 5 minutes length on a round table of 7 m diameter.

The members of the jury were: Sigrid Gareis, curator for dance and theatre, Vienna-Berlin / Lotte Kroll, representative of the audience and set designer, Leipzig / Johanna Lemke, chief editor of the city magazine kreuzer, Leipzig / Ute Richter, fine artist, Leipzig / Felix Ruckert, choreographer, Berlin.

The competition »Das beste deutsche Tanzsolo« is held biennially and is planned to take place next time within the euro-scene Leipzig 2011.
