»Konsonanzen – Dissonanzen«

(»Consonances – Dissonances«)

Music in theatre and dance from the old and new Europe

07 – 12 November 2006

(Prefaces to the printed programme – including conception of the festival)

»Where language ends, dance begins. And where dance ends, music begins.« As a festival of theatre and dance, we naturally do not want these words (based on E. T. A. Hoffmann) to form a stumbling block to theatre, but they make quite some sense. Under the festival motto, »Consonances – Dissonances«, the role of music and sound on the stage should be investigated and some very unusual possibilities demonstrated in the interplay of the performing arts.

For the first time, the euro-scene Leipzig has issued a »Carte blanche«, namely to Maria Magdalena Schwaegermann, artistic director of the Zürcher Theater Spektakel. This »white card« for a guest performance will also be given to a different member of our artistic advisory council in each of the coming years, enriching the programme with a different perspective and contributing to further European networking.

For the 3rd time, the annual meeting of the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) of Berlin is taking place during our festival, which will also contribute some public events.

My warmest thanks go to everyone who makes the festival possible, in terms of both finance and ideas. Among the 12 guest performances from 11 countries at 22 shows and 9 venues, there will certainly be no Beethoven symphony that is »only« danced – come and be surprised. Enjoy!

As a spectator at the internationally highly rated euro-scene Leipzig festival, it is my pleasure, for the first time, to present to you a guest performance from Turkey. In the musical theatre piece, »Ashura«, the theatre company 5. Sokak Tiyatrosu (Theatre 5th Street) with Mustafa and Övül Avkıran demonstrates an excellent example of how close to one another art and politics can be. With »Ashura«, I hope to provide the audience of the Leipzig festival – where there is always interest in current issues – an insight into the diversity and richness of Turkish culture.
