On a large table documents are piled up; at the side lurks a strange machine. The stage is fearsomely barren. Slowly the five actors approach the text, the first vowels slip out of their mouths, and the first words are contorted into exotic music. Their voices mix with sound collages and pictures racing across large screens.

Impressions from the first decades of this century: urban life, world war, hunger, the slaughtering of sick animals. A dead horse and the large factories in the new world – pictures that the stage machinery now answer, with rhythmic stamping, like soldier boots, as if the factory work were a continuation of the war. Like a night train the piece begins to move, and to race away with an ever more rapidly accelerating tempo.

Romeo Castellucci, born in 1960 in Cesena, near Bologna, is the artistic director of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio – today by far the most radical company of the contemporary Italian theatre. He staged the novel by Louis-Ferdinand Céline (1894-1961) – published in 1932 and a milestone in modern literature. Castellucci chose the original French, which builds a unity of sound and rhythm and becomes one voice in the concert of sounds, pictures and machines.

Castellucci, who is fully conscious of the explosive nature of a discussion with the anti-Semitic author, here works with great concentration on the implementation of the text, revelling far less in symbols and associations than in his »Giulio Cesare« (»Julius Caesar«), which was invited to euro-scene Leipzig 1997. »Voyage au bout de la nuit« represents an exceptional piece that could scarcely be more gripping, tormenting and fascinating.
