Die Musik wird eingespielt.

A human being is attacked by technology's infernal rhythms. Video, film, and slide pictures surge past in an imaginary city; all elements of the omnipresent electronic splatter by the media, by electric household appliances, by the hustle and noise out on the streets. An escape seems impossible, yet this is only one side of the coin since the dream of a meaningful human existence is simply a hallucination without technology.

Right in the middle of it is a human being; fragile, but full of brawn and energy. He has something in common with the tiny moon Io that circles the huge planet Jupiter. Io remains constantly active through its hot, volcanic eruptions. If humanity is not to turn into a malleable machinery, it must find and open channels of communication between the art of daily survival and technology. In the bustle of citified daily life does the grim fight for maximum performance alternate with calm breathing spaces. In the alternating changes one can discover technology's playful elements and the buoyant pictures full of light and music that were created by it. When finally the technical madness artistically fades into lyric poetry, one question remains open: What future has humanity in the universe of inescabale technologies?

Jean-Marc Matos completed studies in informatics and industrial electronics in Caracas and at New York's university. At the same time he did not only take choreography and dance instructions at the Cunningham Studio in New York but also looked beyond towards other modern dance concepts. Furthermore he developed a graphical system for computer recording of choreography.

The K. Danse company goes back to a troupe that Matos had founded 1979 in New York and which he renamed after his return to France in 1983. So far he performed 23 choreographies with that company and made guest appearances on many important European festivals as well as in New York and in Montréal. The topic of man in the city chained to new spectacular technologies was used by Matos in several previous productions. After its Parisian premiere in 1992, »Io« was also performed in France, Belgium, and Pakistan. It played several times with spectacular success in Paris' famous Palais de Tokyo.

»Jean-Marc Matos is unique in France's dance world. This choreographer, who is an electrical engineer by training, gives us as his research result the passionate report that dance can communicate with the new technologies« (Dominique Frétard, Le Monde, Paris, 13.11.1991).
