The euro-scene Leipzig took place from 2nd to 7th November 2010 for the 20th time. Under the motto »Spurensuche« (»Searching for traces«) the festival of contemporary European theatre embarked on a journey both towards a résumé of its own development since its foundation in 1991 and towards setting a course for the future. The festival showed 12 guest plays from 10 countries in 25 performances and 9 theatre venues. About 7,500 spectators saw the performances of main and fringe programme with an utilisation of 97.8%. The festival was opened by the company les ballets C de la B from Ghent with the dance play »Out of context – for Pina« by Alain Platel. The audience welcomed both performances enthusiastically with standing ovations. Further highlights were the German premieres of both Italian companies Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio / Romeo Castellucci, Cesena, with »Storia contemporanea dell`Africa. Vol. III« (»Contemporary history of Africa, Vol. III«) and the company Pippo Delbono, Modena, with »La menzogna« (»The lie«). The three »modern classics«, purposely invited as focal point of the 20th anniversary, earned much applause: »Sonja« by Jaunais Rīgas teātris (New Riga Theatre) / Alvis Hermanis, »Twee stemmen« (»Two voices«) by NTGent / Johan Simons with the fantastic Jeroen Willems, Amsterdam – this year's carte blanche by Klemens Wannenmacher, Berlin – and the shadow theatre »Sávitrí« by Divadlo Líšeň (Theatre Líšeň), Brno, showing also its latest puppet theatre play »Žabáci – Sny starého dědka« (»Frogs – The dreams of the old«). The guest play from Kosovo also met with great interest: Teatri Kombëtar i Kosovës (National Theatre Kosovo), Prishtina, showed »Çifti Martin« (»The Martins«) directed by Bekim Lumi. The festival closed with the Ballet Preljocaj , Aix-en-Provence, showing the choreography »Empty moves (part I & II)« by Angelin Preljocaj. |

On the occasion of the anniversary year euro-scene Leipzig awarded an in-house project for artists from Central Germany. Co-producers were Hellerau / Europäisches Zentrum der Künste (European Centre of Arts) Dresden and the Thalia Theater Halle. The Leipzig director Philipp J. Neumann won the call for applications with the interdisciplinary instinct theatre »Prophezeiung 20/11« (»Prophecy 20/11«), which premiered at the festival. The choreography was developed by Steffi Sembdner, the set by Hagen Tilp. The audience showed itself most interested in the play and discussed about the modern and partially disconcerting form of theatre as to man's capacity of reason. The theatre award for Central Germany is planned to be advertised biannually in 2012 next time. |

This year an extensive fringe programme was offered again. Films by Alain Platel and Romeo Castellucci were shown in the presence of the artists. The German premiere of Pippo Delbono's film »La paura« (»The fear«) was also met with great interest. The ARTE film »Blanche neige« (»Snow white«) by Angelin Preljocaj, Aix-en-Provence, invited the whole family, and choreographer Catharina Gadelha, Cologne, gave the workshop »Mein Bild ist Dein Bild« (»My image is your image«). The film »Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen« (»A glance behind the curtains«) by Bernd E. Gengelbach, co-director and technical head of the festival, and filmmaker Tilman König, Leipzig, about 20 years euro-scene Leipzig had its premiere, too. A two-day symposium under the title »Ost-West-Passagen« (»East-West Passages«) took place in cooperation with the International Theatre Institute (ITI), Berlin. Conception and direction were in the hands of Michael Freundt, deputy director of the ITI. Numerous experts from Eastern and Western Europe and about 50 participants discussed trends and the (lacking) exchange of theatre in Europe. The symposium was subdivided into public panel discussions and internal workgroups. |
